Experimentations 1- 2017

On that year, pre and in-service teachers were asked to put the concept of TBIC to work to think and express their learning experiences within the course differently.

When browsing their assemblages you may want to think about the ways matter may have affected the transformative potential of their becoming in CALL.

Feel free to share your thoughts and your stories

This Multimedia Reflective Collage was created to represent various moments and elements that affected my own TBIC, or Teacher Becoming in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning). A "Bitmoji" avatar character was used as a visual representation of the various elements that contributed to my own becoming in CALL. To view the collage, simply download the PowerPoint presentation. At the top of the PPT menu bar, select "Slide Show" and then click on "From Beginning". This will allow the presentation to play, with audio clips to explain the various visuals in the presentation. Please ensure that your speakers (or headphones) are on and connected, to hear an explanation of this collage and details about my own learning and becoming in CALL. Enjoy!

When creating my collage I chose the theme of “Building Blocks” to illustrate how my learning has grown in this course. This theme is fitting not only because it depicts how my learning has grown but also because it shows how my learning will continue even once this course has met its end. I will continue to build on my knowledge of ICT in second language learning classrooms as I develop as a teacher in the future.
I went through the modules and individually described what I felt was most important from each. This way, I could break down the “blocks” of my growth throughout this course.

My inspiration for this project was a reflection of my past understanding of CALL, present learning through my Technology Integration Project (Learning Centers) as well as EDU 7133 Learning Activities and key takeaways/ projection of my future interactions with CALL.

My Becoming in CALL has been shaped robustly by the experiences I had in EDU7133, as well as by my prior experience as a young language learner using basic CALL programs in the 1980s and 1990s in a low-tech environment, but also as a future teacher integrating technology into different subjects by using learning centres.  After delving into the CALL literature at the beginning of this course, I was unsettled by the recurring barriers to technology integration.  For over three decades, numerous studies have identified the asme issues over and over, such as lack of teacher training on technological applications and general lack of technological resources (Claeys et al.,1997; Lee, 2000; Hew and Brush, 2007).  After identifying the problem I felt was most pressing I went about researching methods in which one could meaningfully integrate technology into a low-tech environment and with minimal training.  By using past experience in creating learning centres and having witnessed their benefit, my team went about creating an online learning centre that could serve as a free tool to other instructors to use and adjust to their own specifications/lessons/activities.  Moving forward out of this course, I am more engaged with technology than I was before, even though I work with adaptive technology every day.  This course has allowed me to explore technologies that I was not familiar with, which made me uncomfortable, but also widened my lens when it comes to auditing technology.  I leave this course with the urge to keep updating my technological skills in order to remain current and in step with the technology that students will be required to engage with in a 21st century learning environment. The skills and sensibilities I learned in this course have shaped my approach to this collage, which aims to provide a multi-modal map to my Becoming in Call.

I have created a Padlet for the multimedia collage to reflect on the topics and things of interest that we have learned throughout this semester. I included such topics as 21st century learners, motivating ESL students through technology, using different applications in the classroom, CALL, blended classrooms, distance education, and incorporating information and communication technology. Within these topics I summarized what they are, the uses in an ESL classroom they can have, and some of the information that was learned within this course. Along side the information on these topics there are videos, images, and a powtoon that I created. Additionally, I incorporated some topics that are of interest regarding technology in the classroom. I looked at the development of “text talk” and emoji in society today and how students today use these languages for communicating. For this topic I included some examples and pictures and a few links to movie summaries that use this language.  I also included my thoughts on the future of technology in the classroom and incorporating virtual reality in different ways to help ESL students succeed. This Padlet helps to  shows the use and benefits that technology can have on education and language in the classroom.

For my multimedia reflective collage I wanted to address the main concept of 21st learning competencies, the use of technology in today’s classroom and the connection to language learning and to the global world.  Through the M.Ed program at Ottawa University I have taken a few courses in relation to integration of technologies in education and there are many common themes with each one.  The understanding that technology is not replacing teaching and should not replace teaching or the facilitator in the classroom but rather be used to increase, extend or make learning meaningful.  Technology is used for student engagement, confidence and for collaboration with students and their communities.  For this collage I used text, pictures and videos that I feel demonstrate my understanding and becoming of CALL but also ideas and knowledge that I am going to use to deepen my students learning, making more authentic connections to the world around them and to help prepare them for the future.  As educators we can also discuss the benefits and integration of technology for a particular group of students (ie. Students with exceptionalities, ELL etc.) but through my learning and personal experience I believe technology allows for closure of gaps and equal learning opportunities for ALL students rather than just focusing on a particular group of students.

I chose to use Piktochart in order to put together my thoughts on the course and what my great take aways were. I like this application because it is eye catching, offers a cohesive layout to my collage and allows for video embedding, which I really liked. Throughout this course I have learned a lot of valuable things that will continue to inform my practise not only in terms of how I can support language learners but all learners. The integration of technology extends far beyond it's uses in language teaching and learning and allows for students to engage with the curriculum and course content in new and interesting ways. Overall I really enjoyed this course and all it had to offer. I liked the different uses of technology and I enjoyed working as part of a collaborative team in order to create a prototype that furthered my own personal discoveries with CALL.

The product I produced on Popplet is an illustration of my technological journey from being a minor luddite to not being one at all.  You will notice that I have use two metaphors, illustrating this journey:
1). A caterpillar's transformation into a butterfly.
2). A Buddhist's journey to Enlightenment/Nirvana.
You'll notice that I was a minor luddite and perhaps somewhat creative technologically in my classroom; however, as I traveled through this course, I became more open to/comfortable with using technology in my classroom.
