Experimentations 2 - 2019

On that year, pre-and in service teachers were asked to create a multimedia collage of their becoming in CALL throughout this session as a way to disturb current representations of the connections between technology, language, and education.  To do so, they had to pick at least two of the following elements to map the ways they contributed to their transformations in CALL during this session: Intensity, resonance, their body, order, logic, speed, language, disruptions, boundaries, codes, interconnectivity, unpredictability, ambiguity, power, entanglements, or any other unexpected elements not listed here.

When browsing the collages, you may want to think about the ways the connections at play may have amplified or reduced the capacity of language and technology to change and be changed.

Feel free to share your thoughts and your stories

When creating my collage I chose a car emoji as my icon, because cars facilitate travel and it symbolises my journey in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL).   The project is essentially a reflection of my understanding of technology  in the teaching/learning process prior to learning more about CALL and how my understanding and appreciation of CALL changed as my knowledge of it grew.
The first stage is titled "Before My Journey in CALL" and reflects how I viewed technology as a teaching tool before my study of CALL.  The second stage is titled "My Journey" and reflects how my understanding and attitude changed as I learned more about CALL.  The third stage is titled "My Current Position" and reflects my current level of awareness, appreciation and understanding of CALL.  The last stage of my journey is titled "Going Forward" and reflects developments and possibilities of CALL in the future.
The background of the collage is a picture of a beach where sea meets sand.  It represents the vast sea of knowledge and possibilities that exist in relation to CALL. The part of the sea where the water meets the sand symbolises constant change as the sea is always washing away footprints in much the same way technology is always changing and new paradigms are being established.

In my multimedia collage, I focused on the elements of Language, Interconnectivity, Unpredictability, and Speed. My approach was to consider layers of these elements based on my experiences throughout the course: in my Community Service Learning project, working through the course content as well as my experiences as a teacher of English as a Second Language in a LINC Program. As I embarked on this final project, I had an image in my mind of Peer Gynt peeling layers off his onion looking for the essence of life in Ibsen’s play. In the end, he finds nothing is left; and the essence lies in the process of looking for the essence. Each layer I have considered in the padlet I have created played a role in shaping my becoming in CALL. They did so in a unique entanglement.

The inspiration of this Multimedia Reflective Collage was to illustrate my thought process of how I have come to understand TBIC, or Teacher Becoming in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), specifically through this course, EDU7133. It is no surprise that the majority of the connections are surrounded around “Disruption” in the collage. While this was not done purposefully, the naturalness of how this developed in the creation of the collage is intriguing. It demonstrates that TBIC, is happening regardless of whether teachers and schools are prepared.  Therefore, I believe it is imperative for all educators to see some benefits in ICT in their classroom. This collage, its connectedness of all the elements that are present, helps illustrate the learning that took place in this course for me. The idea that everything can be linked such as in a Rhizome growth, calls for much disruption in our normal way of thinking, and requires reflection with each connection and disruption. I also wanted to show the creativity in which traditional forms of teaching and learning can be blended with technology to help students enjoy learning in a safe, and fun environment. We are all unique, and the differences we share are lesser than what people have in common.

My Multimedia Reflective Collage was created to show my becoming in CALL. I reflected on my past and present experiences as a learner and teacher and on the course, CALL, and technology in general. Additionally, I highlighted the key takeaways as a result of my new learning experience. I used multimedia resources (e.g., text, images, audio, YouTube videos, and infographics) to show my learning."

I have created a multimedia infographic to share my experiences throughout this course and my becoming in CALL as a Master of Education student. I am not an educator but I am an avid language learner and exist in a bilingual space so many of my peers and colleagues are learning and improving their language skills.
I chose to use an infographic because I find them to be very visually appealing and viewers can gather a lot of information with minimal effort on their part. The combination of text and visuals will make it easier to understand and remember the content of my infographic. I used a linear format because I considered my learning to follow a timeline of what I knew before the course, what I learned during the course, and what I will explore after the course.

This reflective collage provides visual prompts to release our thinking, assisting us to solidify and conceive the scholarly and practical ideas we learn during this semester. Creating the collage aid us to access our previously hidden passive knowledge and create new understandings and move toward metacognitive reflections.
“The soul never thinks without an image” (Aristotle, cited in Arnheim, 1969, p. 13).

I have created this collage to represent some of the elements that helped contribute to my transformation in CALL. Although I have learned a lot through this course, I have chosen two elements to present on: language and interconnectivity. Language plays a key role in technology. As a society we have created a new culture in which we use language differently to communicate online. This includes the use of emojis and the creation of new words. Technology has also revamped the way we teach language in classrooms. Through the use of videos, online activities, blogs and various websites teachers can teach language in a fun engaging way. Technology has also connected us with millions worldwide. This interconnectivity has transformed the way we teach and learn new languages.

I used Piktochart to put my takeaways from the course together. There are four parts in the collage, including three parts about the lessons of the course and one part about the technology integration project. The collage recorded the process of my becoming in CALL as my knowledge of technology in language teaching accumulated throughout the course. My progress in the course was achieved through multiple ways such as interacting with my classmates, exploring new technological resources and collecting information from various learning resources. It has been an inspiring learning experience for me, and I will keep exploring technology in the future.

My collage project is intended to map out the way so far I have covered to equipping myself with the powerful instrument of CALL as a future educational practitioner. I feel fulfilled and empowered with the completion of this course but there is still a long way to go and there is never an ending point for anyone dedicated to CALL. Meanwhile, it is also important for an educator to keep a critical eye on technology when embracing it as I stated about the ongoing technological revolution of artificial intelligence.
