Experimentations 3- 2020

On that year, the instructions were mostly the same as the previous year. The following items were just added to the list of elements to consider: Matter (material substance), order/disorder, strength, thoughts, objects,  and stability.

What about you, has your CALL learning journey been smooth and predictable? Have you encountered unforeseen disruptions that produced becoming? How did the element of strength (or any other element listed above) affect your capacity to change and be changed?

Feel free to comment and share your experiences.

My collage encompasses the interconnection among various aspects and intends to show the abstract nature of my thinking throughout this process. Although there are clear connections between the concepts, there is an intentional emphasis on ambiguity, illuminating my “web” of thoughts in my becoming of CALL. For instance, I begin by looking at my initial thoughts about technology and my personal experiences, which are connected to my use of technology in the classroom today, and how the implementation of technology has changed over time. These aspects are then connected to the overarching theme of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) which branches off to other aspects (e.g., interconnectivity, the flipped classroom, etc.). Overall, my becoming in CALL has been a non-linear process (as exemplified through this collage) and is by no means complete. I believe that I am still in the process of “becoming” where I am engaging with and becoming informed of emerging technology every day. This course illuminated the various ways that technology could be implemented in and enhance language learning (Virtual Language Education, Computer-Mediated Communication through synchronous and asynchronous learning, as well as collaboration).
The two main aspects that I focused on was interconnection and boundaries. Interconnection intends to bring together people from around the world (or country) and makes collaboration and language learning seamless. My collage highlights that technology could, in fact, impose boundaries, but is also crucial in blurring/breaking down these barriers that may exist in current education.

My “Teacher Becoming In Call” (TBIC) throughout my experience in EDU5148 has shaped my journey as I navigate my role as a language teacher. While I have utilized technology quite often throughout my career, it had not been fully integrated into my teaching. From this perspective, I chose to document my exploration and discovery of various technological tools that could better shape my classes and allow me to integrate a greater number of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) tools. I chose to focus on the elements of Language, Interconnectivity, and Boundaries, and how these elements all had me rethink how I view technology and how these elements could also be presenting disruptions in language learning. I wanted to visually convey the skills I learned, while also bringing a critical perspective to issues such as digital accessibility and digital literacy. All together, my collage represents my multimedia map to my “Becoming”.

As I created my collage, I wanted to find a strong symbolic image that I felt represented my growth not only throughout this course but also my growth as an educator in 2020. I selected a Sunflower because I felt the symbolism of it sprouting out of the ground and taking up space spoke to my experience in this course starting off with quite honestly very limited knowledge around CALL and ICT and now at the end of this course, confidently taking up space as I am able to express the knowledge I have received regarding the use of various technologies within the classroom. I started off my collage by stating the 3 key ideas and questions I entered the course with, as an educator during the Covid-19 pandemic I have had to become a virtual educator relatively quickly and without much preparation. These questions have guided me throughout my experience in this course and helped me to ground the foundational knowledge we received in my personal practice. I included a diagram in my collage that helped me to visually present my flow of thoughts and the various intersectional issues that have come up as I have navigated the course. As we move up the sunflower, I explain my beginning thoughts as the course began, and then how the issues of interconnection came up as I navigated both digital learning and teaching. I then began to consider how notions of unpredictability came up specifically as my group and I cultivated our product for our Technology Integration Project. I then discussed the lingering concerns I still have at the end of the semester and finally, contextualized the information and foundational knowledge from the course into how it will be actively applied in my personal classroom.

I conceptualized this project as an advocacy piece. In the onset I knew that I wanted to demonstrate my learning and journey of becoming throughout this course. The Piktochart was an advocacy piece and the Padlet was a resource guide that would help future educators develop technologically assistive projects. I was extremely proud of the work that my group and I had completed throughout the duration of the course. We all had limited coding knowledge and persevered through developing a course online. I felt empowered by this process and wanted to communicate that developing Computer-Assisted Language Learning ("CALL") programs is something that all motivated parties are capable of. Compiling the resource list through tablet provides ease of access for those that are interested.

For my multimedia reflective assemblage, I have decided to create a timeline of my academic development and experience with computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Through information communication technology (ICT), I have been able to further develop my language learning. I have presented below some of the many ways my language was influenced over the term. There have also been many technological elements that I was introduced to throughout this course. These technological elements have facilitated my learning and I will use these skills to improve my teaching methods in the future. Essentially, this assemblage demonstrates the steppingstones in the timeline of my linguistic development throughout this term through the discovery of new technologies.

In this Multimedia Reflective Assemblage, I have reflected on my own transformation and becoming as a teacher in CALL, throughout the EDU5148 course and my involvement in our group project. Due to the current climate, it might seem comforting to stick to what one knows and is used to. However, I have found more opportunities to grow by stepping out of my comfort zone and by seeking destabilization. In this assemblage, I prove this by looking at my past experiences, stating my present understanding and predicting what may be in the future.
